I finished watching Joy of Life this past Saturday and I really liked it. I had planned to take a break before starting Season 2 but I am not patient and I usually change my plans on a whim, like when I wanted to read Tian Ya Ke after finishing Devil Venerable and then made a poll but ended up starting Global Examination.

Anyway, I've only watched the first episode because the weekend was busy and then I also wanted to keep watching Nirvana in Fire. I'm on episode 43 and I'm tempted to try alternating one episode of each show (JoL and NiF) a day. Bot shows are so good and I want to keep watching. It's a shame I have responsibilities 😞

I woud like to write something deep about JoL because it has so many layers and I feel like I could spend hours just talking about different aspects of it, like Fan Xian and how he sees the world he lives in through the lens of all the knowledge he has about the history, literature and culture from other world/time. But I also enjoy the court intrigue so much and wondering who is behind everything that happens and why. And when we get the answer to that, there's a part of me that goes: yeah, I totally get it... I don't agree with the method but I get it. I can like both the protagonist and the villains of a story, and love them both 😁

Something else I like a lot is the way it makes me laugh and then cry in a single episode. And the outfits (particularly Fan Xian's) and headpieces... how I love them.

But yeah, I don't even know where to start and maybe I can try at some point or when I finish watching S2. I don't know.

Something I also got from this show is that now I want to read Dream of the Red Chamber. I mentioned a couple of days ago on fedi that I am taking a MOOC about China that talks a little about the history, philosophy, literature, language and other aspects about chinese culture through the centuries and they mention that book as one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature, and of course I want to learn more than that of what I see in c-dramas or c-novels. (I also wanted to do that when I read Qi Ye, but maybe I need to re-read it first and actually write down a list of the poems and other works referenced in it.) And maybe it won't give me a new, different perspective on the story the show tells but maybe it will, like the way it happened when I watched Tian Mi Mi (1996) after watching Moonlight Chicken. In any case, I like learning new things, so it will be good. I should also try to read some poetry but even in Spanish I've never vibed that much with poetry... I like some poems but I feel like I cannot grasp the meaning of many of them so it gets a bit frustrating.

I have post it's on my laptop about other things I want to write about but maybe I'll do it later or tomorrow.

It's been two months since the Nirvana in Fire watch party started on fedi and I didn't imagine I would enjoy it as much as I'm enjoying it. When I started watching it, I didn't know what it was about (like I usually do with everything I read or watch these days). So, every new revelation leaves me surprised and intrigued and wanting to watch more. I'm not really going to talk about the plot but since the earliest episodes I liked Mei Changsu. I just love that kind of character a lot.

Yesterday, I started watching episode 30 but had things to do and ended up exhausted, so I didn't finish. It turns out the hot weather is my kryptonite and I need a lot of time to recover after spending time outside, even if I wasn't that exposed directly to the sun.

Anyway, the watch party has been so much fun and, to me, personally, a challenge to not binge watch it. Truly, an exercise on self-control. According to the schedule, this week it was time to watch episodes 27 and 28, so we're halfway through the series and I have the impression that what has happened so far is not even half as intense as what is coming. I'm looking forward to the second half of this drama. And we'll see how much time I can resist being (more or less) on schedule. This week I gave in to temptation and I'm an episode ahead but here comes into play Joy of Life.

A little more than a week ago, after seeing more and more mentions of Joy of Life Season 2 on my feed in fedi and also seeing it as a suggestion on Viki, I decided to start watching Joy of Life. It piqued my curiosity enough to continue watching it and as of today I have seen 19 episodes. I like Fan Xian and I want to know what's going on. Honestly, I wasn't planning to start watching another long drama, but here I am, and I'll probably finish watching the first season before I finish NiF. Then I can watch Joy of Life Season 2. And now there are tentative plans to watch NiF 2 when we're done with NiF.

Something I've noticed is that now the 40-45 minute episodes don't seem so long to me now. I've also noticed that I really enjoy the action sequences, the fights are so fun to watch. Before, I always preferred short shows and short episodes, and that's one of the reasons I enjoy watching japanese and korean BLs, but watching Cdramas has been a good way to learn patience and enjoy the journey, and also appreciate the fact that there's enought time to tell different kind of stories. This process has been almost parallel to me starting my danmei journey too and I've noticed most of the novels are longer than the average book I'm used to, so it makes sense that the adaptations are long too.

And, speaking about cnovels, I started reading Global Examination yesterday in the bus, so we'll see how it goes.
